A sunrise Cappadocia elopement with hot air balloons

A Cappadocia elopement is one of those experiences that almost feels unreal – and this morning proved exactly why. Set in central Cappadocia (Turkey), this landscape is shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions and thousands of years of erosion, leaving behind soft rock valleys, cave dwellings, and those iconic formations that honestly look like something from another planet.

We arrived late the evening before, when everything was already dark. But even from the car, just driving into the area, you could feel that this place was different. The shapes, the scale, the way the land rises around you – it catches you off guard, even without seeing it properly.

By the next morning, that same landscape became the setting for Olya and Dima’s sunrise adventure – a quiet elopement experience with hot air balloons slowly rising around us.

Before sunrise: chasing hot air balloons in the dark

We only had one morning. No scouting. No backup plan. Just a 4 a.m. wake-up call and a drive into complete darkness, hoping we’d find the right spot before everything began.

Cappadocia isn’t quiet at sunrise – not even close. Viewpoints fill up quickly, and the balloon launches attract a lot of people from all over the world. But instead of staying with the crowds, we walked a little further away from the noise, and found a more secluded edge overlooking the valley.

And then we waited. At first, you don’t see much. Just faint movement in the distance. A soft glow here and there as the burners fire up. Balloons slowly taking shape in the dark.

Then suddenly – one lifts. Then another. And another. Within minutes, the sky starts filling up. This morning show is incredible!

Sunrise happens fast here

If you’re used to slow, lingering sunrises (like in Northern Norway), this feels completely different. Light changes quickly. The window is short.

Some balloons are already floating high when the first light hits. Others are just lifting off as the sun breaks over the horizon. It all happens at once – movement, color, light shifting every second. There’s no time to overthink anything. You just shoot, move, adjust, and take it all in at the same time.

Is it always like this? (a quick reality check)

Hot air balloons in Cappadocia fly most mornings – but not all. Flights depend heavily on weather conditions, especially wind speed and direction, rain, storms and visibility. If conditions aren’t safe, flights are cancelled. And that can happen last minute.

That’s part of what makes mornings like this feel a bit unreal – you know it could just as easily not have happened.

Hot air balloon flights: worth it or not?

I believe it is possible to combine a photoshoot on the ground and a balloon ride – but it comes with trade-offs. Most shared balloon flights are surprisingly expensive (often around €150–€300 per person), and private rides go significantly higher.

They also start early and run on a tight schedule, which means you’ll have less flexibility for photos on the ground – especially during that short sunrise window. For this morning, we chose to stay grounded. And honestly, that gave us more time to move, explore, and fully use the landscape – instead of rushing between moments.

A spontaneous adventure (in platform heels)

This morning we were figuring things out as we went – navigating unfamiliar terrain in low light, adjusting to angles, searching for epic locations. And doing all of that while the bride was walking through uneven ground in platform heels. Not exactly the easiest setup.

But that’s also part of what made it feel real. No perfect timeline. No controlled environment. Just showing up, adapting, and making the most of what we had – this is how most of the adventure elopements unfold.

A Cappadocia elopement in Love Valley that feels unreal

After the balloons slowly drifted down and the sky cleared, we headed to Love Valley. We had already seen parts of the valley from a distance earlier that morning, but getting closer to the formations hits differently. If the morning felt surreal, this place pushed it even further.

The rock formations here are shaped by centuries of erosion in soft volcanic stone – tall, sculptural, and completely unlike anything you see in most parts of the world. Some of them have been used as churches, homes and shelters over time.

Walking through the Valley feels a bit like stepping into a different planet. No distractions. No crowds that early in the morning. Just space, silence, and these massive formations surrounding you. We wandered, explored, and I kept capturing this amazing adventure – no strict plan, just following the light and the landscape.

Why Cappadocia stays with you

I’ve photographed in a lot of epic places – across Norway and beyond. But Cappadocia is one of those locations that genuinely stands out.

Not just because it’s beautiful, but because it’s different. The textures, the scale, the atmosphere, the years of history behind – and of course, the balloons drifting across the sky at sunrise – creating a memorable experience like no other places would ever do.

Thinking about your own Cappadocia elopement?

If you’re dreaming about something a little different – something that feels like an experience, not just a ceremony – a Cappadocia elopement is definitely worth considering. It’s raw, unpredictable, and not always easy to plan perfectly. But when it works, it’s something you’ll never forget.
