An aurora borealis wedding is something many couples dream about, but for Kayleigh and Dale, their trip to Northern Norway became so much more than a chance to see the northern lights.
Travelling all the way from Indiana to Alta, they came in search of an unforgettable wedding experience in the Arctic. Over three incredible days, they exchanged vows by the fjord, explored the world’s northernmost igloo hotel, shared s’mores around a bonfire, met huskies, and stepped beneath the dancing aurora for unforgettable northern lights wedding portraits.

An arctic wedding ceremony by the fjord
As with every winter wedding in Norway, there are no guarantees when it comes to weather or the aurora. But sometimes everything comes together. The light, the snow, the sky, and the timing – all align to create the kind of Arctic wedding adventure most couples only dream about.
Kayleigh and Dale exchanged vows beside the fjord on a crisp February afternoon. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains and framed by a beautiful circular flower arch, they said their vows as the low winter sun cast a beautiful golden glow across the landscape. Despite the cold, conditions could hardly have been better. Clear skies, fresh snow, and the soft Arctic light – such a perfect backdrop for a wedding ceremony in the Arctic.
Afterwards, as a husband and wife now, they gathered around a bonfire, toasted with champagne, and enjoyed s’mores while the sky slowly shifted through soft pastel colours.

An ice hotel and northern lights wedding experience
Before heading out for the evening’s portraits, we stopped by Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. Built entirely from snow and ice each winter, it is the northernmost igloo hotel in the world and one of Alta’s most unique attractions.
Walking through the ice corridors and admiring the intricate sculptures felt like stepping into another world – a great addition to an already unforgettable wedding experience.

Aurora borealis wedding portraits under the arctic sky
One of the biggest reasons couples travel to Northern Norway for their adventure wedding is the possibility of experiencing aurora borealis. While the northern lights can never be guaranteed, we were fortunate enough to spend two consecutive evenings photographing Kayleigh and Dale beneath the arctic sky. And what a beautiful show we got to witness – such a perfect addition for their aurora borealis wedding!
The first evening brought a beautiful display of aurora dancing above the snowy landscape. Watching the lights move across the sky is always special, but experiencing it as part of a wedding celebration makes it even more memorable. Surrounded by snow, mountains, and the stillness of the Arctic winter, we created some truly unforgettable northern lights wedding portraits.

Repurposing the flower arch
For the second evening, I wanted to create something a little different.
Earlier that day, Kayleigh and Dale had exchanged vows beneath a circular flower arch overlooking the fjord. The arch had become such an important part of their wedding day that I couldn’t bear to simply leave it behind. The flowers had already survived a full day in the Arctic cold, and before saying goodbye to them, I decided to give them one final moment to shine.
We brought the arch down to the shoreline, wrapped it in fairy lights, and transformed it into a glowing centerpiece for their evening portraits. Standing beneath the illuminated arch with the sea beside them and the aurora above, Kayleigh and Dale looked as though they had stepped into a winter fairytale.
The northern lights weren’t at their strongest that evening, but they didn’t need to be. The combination of the glowing arch, fresh snow, the Arctic coastline, and the soft colours of the aurora created some of my favourite aurora borealis wedding portraits of the entire season.

Dog sledding and the perfect ending to an arctic wedding adventure
The adventure continued the following day at Trasti & Trine, one of Alta’s most charming boutique hotels and dog sledding farms.
After spending the day out on the trails with a team of eager huskies, Kayleigh and Dale changed back into their wedding attire for one final portrait session. As if the Arctic hadn’t already delivered enough magic, soft snowflakes began falling around us, creating the perfect atmosphere for their last photographs.

More than just a northern lights wedding
The huskies, the snowfall, and the peaceful winter landscape felt like the perfect ending to an already unforgettable elopement celebration. Over the course of three days, the bride and groom experienced so many of the things that make Northern Norway such a unique wedding and elopement destination: a fjord-side ceremony, an ice hotel, northern lights, dog sledding, arctic landscapes, and moments of quiet connection surrounded by nature.
An aurora borealis wedding is often what first inspires couples to travel to Northern Norway, but experiences like this remind me that the real magic is found in everything surrounding it.
For Kayleigh and Dale, what started as a dream of northern lights wedding portraits became a three-day Arctic wedding adventure filled with fjord landscapes, glowing sunsets, fresh snowfall, dog-sledding, and unforgettable memories beneath the Arctic sky.
