A Viking elopement in Norway: following family roots through the fjords

What if your elopement wasn’t just about finding a beautiful place to get married? What if it could also take you somewhere you had been connected to long before you ever arrived? For Kate and Jeff, their Viking elopement in Norway became exactly that.

Two days travelling through Western Norway, chasing mountains, family names and pieces of Norwegian history – from mountaintop views above Loen to exchanging their vows beneath Eggenipa, exploring the Viking village of Njardarheimr in Gudvangen and eventually walking straight into the cold waters of a Norwegian fjord in Aurland.

But this story actually started with something much simpler. A surname.

Following Norwegian family roots

Jeff has Norwegian ancestry, and his last name is Egge. He knew that somewhere in his family’s past there was a connection to Norway, although tracing exactly where his ancestors came from wasn’t quite so straightforward. There are several places carrying the Egge name around the country.

So when Kate and Jeff decided to elope in Norway, they didn’t simply want to pick the most famous fjord or the prettiest mountain they could find. They wanted their journey to mean something.

One of the places that caught their attention was Byrkjelo in Western Norway, home to the distinctive mountain Eggenipa. And suddenly there was a connection that felt almost too perfect to ignore.

They would get married beneath Eggenipa. But before we got there, we had another mountain to visit.

Starting the wedding day above Loen

Our adventure started in Loen, where we took the Loen Skylift high above the fjord. And this was one location I really didn’t want to waste.

Norway has endless spectacular mountains, but there’s usually a catch: if you want the mountaintop view, you have to get yourself up the mountain. For a hiking elopement, that can be part of the adventure. I photograph couples who genuinely want to put on their hiking boots, carry their wedding clothes up a trail and work for that view.

But that isn’t the right kind of adventure for everybody. Loen is one of those rare places where you can reach an incredible mountain view without a long or difficult hike. Within a short time, we could be standing high above the fjord with enormous mountains around us and cliffs dropping into the landscape below.

An intimate elopement beneath Eggenipa

From Loen, we continued towards Eggenipa near Byrkjelo. Eggenipa is the kind of mountain that doesn’t really need much help creating a dramatic backdrop. Its distinctive peak rises above the surrounding landscape, and standing underneath it makes you feel incredibly small. For Kate and Jeff, however, choosing their ceremony location wasn’t only about what looked spectacular in photographs.

Jeff has a prosthetic leg, which meant that hiking high into the mountains wasn’t a realistic option for their wedding day. But an adventure elopement doesn’t have to mean climbing the biggest mountain. Sometimes it’s about finding a way to experience a place that works for YOU.

We found a beautiful accessible location beneath Eggenipa where the mountain still completely dominated the landscape. And there, with no guests and no huge wedding production around them, Kate and Jeff exchanged their vows. Just the two of them, surrounded by Western Norway. And their two-day elopement in Western Norway was nowhere near finished.

Why choose one elopement location when you can make it an adventure?

This is one of the reasons I love multi-day elopements. Kate and Jeff had travelled across the world to get married in Norway. It seemed almost ridiculous to squeeze the entire experience into a couple of hours at one location.

Western Norway is particularly good for this kind of adventure wedding because completely different landscapes and experiences can exist surprisingly close to one another. Mountains. Fjords. Tiny villages. Waterfalls. Historic places. Roads winding through valleys that are worth experiencing in their own right.

Your elopement doesn’t have to be built around one spectacular viewpoint. The journey between the places can become part of the wedding. And on the second day, Kate and Jeff’s journey took us further south – to Gudvangen.

Viking elopement in Norway – Gudvangen and Njardarheimr

From the mountains, our journey continued to Gudvangen and Njardarheimr, a living Viking village surrounded by the dramatic landscape of the Nærøyfjord.

This was exactly the kind of experience Jeff had hoped to find while tracing his Norwegian roots. He had already said that being in Norway somehow felt like coming home, and here he was hungry to learn everything he could about Viking history, traditions and everyday life.

Before entering the village, Kate had a transformation of her own. Our viking guide created an incredible Viking-inspired hairstyle with braids and dreadlocks, and suddenly our bride looked remarkably like a modern-day Lagertha.

We had planned to spend only part of the day here. We ended up staying for hours.

An unexpected connection in the Viking village

And somewhere along the way, the day became about more than history. We met a woman named Angela playing a drum, and Kate asked if she could join her. The two began playing together with an ease that was difficult to explain – almost as if they already knew each other and had practiced together before.

Another woman nearby was moved to tears. When the music stopped, she approached Kate and simply said:

“I know you.”

I was only there observing it through my camera, and I can’t really explain what happened between them. But Angela told us that people often find something personal in this place – connection, peace, grounding, or perhaps something they weren’t expecting to find at all.

It felt strangely fitting. Jeff had come searching for history and a connection to his Norwegian ancestry. Kate found a connection of an entirely different kind.

Kate and Jeff´s Viking elopement in Norway wasn’t about recreating a traditional Viking ceremony. They had already exchanged their I do´s beneath Eggenipa. Instead, Viking heritage became another part of their adventure – one that made the experience uniquely theirs.

Wrapping up the adventure in the cold water of the Aurlandsfjord

After two days of chasing mountains, family names and pieces of Norwegian history through Western Norway, we ended the adventure in Aurland. Kate and Jeff kicked off their shoes and walked straight into the fjord.

Let’s call it their final initiation into Norwegian life. Because… Can you really claim your Viking roots without stepping into freezing Norwegian water – at least once?

And that’s where I left them, but their search continued. They travelled on towards another place carrying Jeff’s family name: Egge Farm.

And perhaps that’s a fitting ending. This journey was never really about finding one definitive answer. It was about following a family name, a connection, a curiosity about where you came from – and seeing where it might lead.
